Theatre Royal Wakefield operates at the heart of the Wakefield community. As well as a vibrant and varied programme of produced and touring work, the Theatre runs a busy Learning and Participation Department. The Theatre runs bespoke learning programmes working across a number of identified at-risk groups including young people from low-income families, socially isolated older people, and adults working to improve their mental wellbeing. Through our fundraising efforts, a number of our projects are free for participants or offer bursaries to ensure that participation is not restricted by economic means. 25% of participants in our youth training programmes and youth productions benefit from a bursary scheme, which is directly funded by the local business community, through individual giving and through grant funding.

In 2017 - 2018 our outreach programme engaged with over 1200 unique learners, providing over 13,000 instances of participation.

“I am pleased that our involvement in education and outreach is now a centrepiece of our work and this, together with a growing number of in-house productions, helps us to provide something unique for Wakefield.”

Sir Rodney Walker
Life President of Theatre Royal Wakefield

Train in Performance and Theatre Making Skills

We run regular weekly training for young people aged 5 - 18 years through our Theatre Royal Performance Academy and our 18 - 30 year old young theatre makers company In On The Act. Throughout the week we work with over 230 young people in the district, improving their skills and love of theatre and the performing arts.

Be in a Show

We regularly hold open auditions for our large musical productions and for our pantomime chorus. Our yearly Wakefield Youth Music Theatre shows are high-quality popular shows and allow the district to celebrate the talents of the young people in Wakefield. Our Performance Academy and our In On The Act group also have performances at the Theatre each year.

Support Teachers and Practitioners

Through our exciting professional development programme Creative Learning Network which we run in partnership with The Hepworth Wakefield we have developed training for teachers and practitioners. We also have a fantastic track record of creating high quality touring theatre for schools. Our most recent show The Big Sleepover for Key Stage One was very well received by teachers and pupils alike.

We produce education packs for a number of our productions that support teachers and students to get the most out of the production. For current education packs please visit our Teachers page.
